The Second International Summer School
‘INEQUALITY OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES’

Hosting a dynamic mix of instructional & networking formats, the Summer School is a unique venue for early-career researchers and experienced professionals to gather and share diverse perspectives on topics and areas central to modern studies in socioeconomic inequality in education.

By engaging in an agenda of firsthand learning and opinion exchange, young scholars benefit from advanced insights into the latest concepts and practical approaches in the subject academic domain, while also receiving immediate expert feedback on their current projects and important guidance about areas and facets to focus on in their further research career.       

AGENDA

This year, the Summer School will comprehensively address the latest scholarship frameworks with respect to socioeconomic inequalities in education, including markers and triggers of such inequities, their reproduction mechanisms, as well as policy and other measures aimed at better closing educational inequality gaps.  

The School’s program will be centered upon the following key aspects:

  • Main sources of inequality in educational opportunities
  • School and out-of-school factors reducing educational inequality
  • Involvement of families of different socioeconomic status into children education
  • Effects of measures to support families and schools in improving educational outcomes
  • Student academic choices, learning paths, and measures to support academic mobility

FACULTY

The School faculty is a premier cohort of accomplished Russian and international academics with multifaceted expertise in educational and social inequality studies.

 HSE professors: Isak Froumin, Marina Pinskaya, Andrey Zakharov, Tatyana Khavenson.

Guest professors:

Susan Dumais, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Lehman College, City University of New York. Susan’s academic interests touch on such areas as sociology of education, social stratification and inequality in education, parenting practices and educational outcomes as well as students’ educational trajectories.

Tommaso Agasisti, PhD, Associate Professor, Politecnico di Milano School of Management, Department of Management, Economics & Industrial Engineering (Italy). His research activity is focused on economics and management of educational services as well as on the economic analysis of local governments’ performance and productive efficiency.

  • A summary of your current research project on a topic relevant to educational inequity (300-500 words)

 Applications are accepted until April 13, 2018. The shortlisted participants will be announced by April 30, 2018.

The School’s working language is English. Enrollees are expected to have sufficient English proficiency to participate in discussions and make presentations.

PARTICIPATION FEE

The School participation fee is 250 euros (including coffee breaks & excursion).

 

HSE Institute of education will award 10 full scholarships to participants selected on a competitive basis.
